Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 July 17 IFRAME: [2]https://www.youtube.com/embed/aX4ozspTPQY?rel=0 Villarrica Volcano Against the Sky Video Credit & Copyright: [3]Gabriel Muñoz; Text: [4]Natalia Lewandowska ([5]SUNY Oswego) Explanation: When [6]Vulcan, the [7]Roman god of fire, swings his blacksmith's hammer, the sky is lit on [8]fire. A recent eruption of [9]Chile's [10]Villarrica volcano shows the delicate interplay between this fire -- actually glowing steam and [11]ash from [12]melted rock -- and the light from distant stars in our [13]Milky Way galaxy and the [14]Magellanic Clouds galaxies. In the featured timelapse video, the [15]Earth rotates under the stars as [16]Villarrica erupts. With about [17]1350 volcanoes, our [18]planet Earth rivals [19]Jupiter's moon Io as the most [20]geologically active place in the [21]Solar System. While both have magnificent beauty, the reasons for the existence of volcanoes on both worlds are different. Earth's volcanoes typically occur between slowly shifting [22]outer shell plates, while [23]Io's volcanoes are caused by [24]gravitational flexing resulting from [25]Jupiter's tidal gravitational [26]pull.
