Astronomy Picture of the Day [1]Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2024 May 22 [2]A big green arc is seen arching across the night sky. The arc fades away above into a green haze, while no green glow is seen below the arc. A dark sky filled with stars and constellations fills the background. Snow and distant trees line the foreground. Please see the explanation for more detailed information. Green Aurora over Sweden Image Credit & Copyright: [3]Göran Strand Explanation: It was bright and green and stretched across the sky. This striking aurora display was captured in 2016 just outside of [4]Östersund, [5]Sweden. Six photographic fields were merged to create the featured panorama spanning almost 180 degrees. Particularly striking aspects of this [6]aurora include its sweeping arc-like shape and its stark definition. [7]Lake [8]Storsjön is seen in the foreground, while several familiar constellations and the star [9]Polaris are visible through the aurora, far in the background. Coincidently, the [10]aurora appears to [11]avoid the Moon visible on the lower left. The aurora appeared a [12]day after a [13]large hole opened in the [14]Sun's corona, allowing particularly energetic particles to flow out into the [15]Solar System. The [16]green color of the aurora is caused by [17]oxygen atoms recombining with ambient [18]electrons high in the [19]Earth's atmosphere.
