Wow, that's wild. I'm guessing it was a manufacturing issue for that year range that so many discs have gone bad (even more so that WB will replace them if still in print).

Disc rot sucks. I've collected for Sega Saturn since the 90s and thankfully only lost one disc in the past few years due to rot (World Series Baseball... thankfully a cheap title). So for a whole few years of DVDs to die out must be due to how they were printed.

Bad luck if you wanted to watch your stored copy of "The Fountainhead-individual and Gary Cooper Signature Collection"....

I've heard of disc rot, but of all the DVDs, blu-ray discs, and CDs I have, I can't say I've seen disc rot on any of them. I still have one of the first DVDs I ever bought (Austin Powers 2, which I bought in 2000, I believe), and I just watched it last year and it played flawlessly. I might be an anomaly though; maybe the discs I've bought are generally good discs.

I had one of the original release Popeye the Sailor cartoon DVD sets from
WB. It did indeed suffer disk rot. At first only one disk wouldn't play.
Now all four won't and I have recently replaced the whole set with a more recent release.

I had a similar issue with another WB issued collection. Luckily, I had
made a digital copy before the disks started to degrade.

I bought both of those during the time frame that the OP mentioned.

I have several other WB releases that I now wonder if they still work or
    not.

It all depends on how well you keep your media. If you store it in a dust free area, away from direct sunlight, and within house temperature, optical media lasts ages.

The exception seems to be chinesse crap media. Some data I recorded on chinesse CDs back in the day is gone because the CDs returned to blank state 15 years later lol.

I've heard a lot of people complain about disc rot, and I've had the thought that maybe they aren't storing their media very well. You have to take care of your stuff.. I've always tended to keep my optical discs in places that are not too hot and never in direct sunlight - not really because I've specifically thought about that, but I've always tended to keep them either on shelves (which are usually inside the house and away from windows) or packed in a closet (which is fairly dark most of the time).

Yeah, sunlight killed my old DVD-Rs - cheap label-less discs I bought
off of geeks.com in the 2000s.

I probably don't need an optical drive these days, but I've been
thinking about getting an older car and sticking with audio CDs. Less distraction than the modern alternative.

For years now, I've had car stereos that have a USB port which support flash drives and MP3 files. It elinimates the hassle of swapping CDs in the car.

DVDs should've been made like AOL CDs that came in the mail. Being in Phoenix, I left one of those things on my dashboard for at least one summer. Still read/copied fine when I tested over a year later.

They also come with touchscreens and lot of computerized junk that has no business being in a car, IMO :-)

I mean, my borying analog car has the AMAZING property that I can adjust the heating, radio and other secodnary controls by turning knobs around without having to take my sight off the road. I find that much harder to accomplish with a thing such as a touchscreen...

Car streos with USB drives have been available for at least the past 20+ years, before cars started coming with touch screens. I had some in a few of my past cars. And my current car is a 2023 and doesn't have a touch screen or any touch panels (which is one reason I chose it out of all the cars available today. It's a Mazda).

I've had some Universal DVDs, like the Legend of Hercules series that had trouble getting some discs to work. The DVD player would say the disc is corrupted or something to that effect.

Oh well, guess I need to get a newer set that takes up like 1/8th of the space from Wal-Mart next time I go.
