In the most recent of updates, Michael Brutman changed from CP437 to UTF8 by default. You have to compile from source and change the default to CP437 if you don't want that behaviour, I believe. What you end up getting, is better compatability with most other telnettable things, for example, if you telnet into a Linux box, things that are UTF8 generally 'just work'. In one of the resources (I forget which), there is a CP437 to UTF8 translation. You need to set that as DOS environment variable, but essentially, when your ye-olde DOS computer sees a UTF8 char, it maps it to a CP437 char, so that life carries on as normal. If it really can't convert the char, you see some ANSI symbol (I forget which one).

So, yes, Brutman is going all-in on UTF8 from Jan 2025.

Its just simply not an option at this point - I've spent days, months and modifying 2o... I always laugh b/c 2oFB isn't the best designed bbS at ALL but it is what it is; and I'm lucky that the ppl love it. :P

I haven't updated my MTCP for a while but I remember UTF was a benefit and a pain at the same time for a while. For telnet specifically there is telnetnu.exe build as an independent fork that helps to keep non unicode compatibility, especially important in BBS world.

Beautiful - I have both an Atari 400 and a 600 that I need to dive into soon enough. Not sure that either is working well just yet - as I don't get any prompt, or BASIC prompt (alth I think that requires a cart...) but I [think I] should at least see some prompt/READY/OK output.

The 400 does not have built in basic so you would just get a cursor that you can type random stuff on the screen with. The 600XL has BASIC and you should get a READY prompt.

I recently created an ASCII only set of menus & textfiles for my MBSE BBS as a means of testing my re-implementation of ASCII mode. It was actually kind of fun seeing the old school boxes drawn with dashes & pipe symbols with plus signs for corners.

Just another thing to maintain whenever you add something new to your BBS...

There are ANSI terms for Atari 8bit. I can't remember if I tried Flickterm on 2oFB but I know ICET wasn't able to handle the ANSI.

Reading and seeing "Bob Term" made me think about a C=64 program I used called Bobs Term Pro.

It had a BBS like option in it.
I got a floppy disc from someone that had a IBM PC text file I could read on the XT we had at work, and I wanted toread it on my home C=64.

One night before I left home to go to work I Ran Bob's Term Pro and had it set to answer a phone call also asked the wife to not answer the phone since I wanted to get that PC .TXT file sent to my computer as a SEQ file.

I reckon the Atari Bob Term had the same feature(s) as the program I used.

100% agree phigan. It would be best if it was an argument e.g. telnet /utf, or at least configurable as default in the MTCP.CFG file with optional switch.

Little stuff like that does bug me (like why the only action of the pgup key is to scroll up the buffer, rather than send pgup to the console).

It certainly did resolve a lot of 'issues' which Michael B didn't care about. I have used it myself. Not sure if you have noticed though, it certainly runs slower than Brutman's. Michael himself muttered something a while ago about it being sloppy code/bad loop routine or something of that ilk, I'd have to read my email to find out.

Whilst I can understand that what he does is a hobby and he's really just in it to satisfy his own PC Jr sized hobby, it really is a shame I think that he doesn't want to connect with his users and grant them some simple feature requests like toggling utf or allowing the use of a pgup key. All very easy to provide in the code I dare say, and sad that a fork had to be made to compensate for that.

jhypyle's fork is a few versions behind now, so it looks close to being abandoned. I actually believe that Michael's current UTF version is actually fine - the CP437 to UTF translation TXT file which he supplies in the docs means that as long as you use the BBS's UTF8 mode, then all the ANSI displays just fine. It's when a BBS doesn't have a UTF8 mode. By default Mystic does, and I'm sure many other do, but some I guess don't. The upside of having UTF8 is that when you're telnetting to a Linux box (which I also do a lot of from my IBM PC), I get pretty darned good compatability from a terminal perspective. If the char can't be displayed by the IBM BIOS, it defaults to a single char that doesn't look broken, unlike how it used to behave, with text spewing out all over the place. So, for me, most BBSes (provided they allow UTF8) operate just fine, and Linux performs good too, as does standard ASCII. So, it is *mainly* the best of both worlds. Just wish he allowed it to be toggled off by a switch or something.

You can compile the Fujinet firmware on anything. I personally use it on a Pi Zero W. Have not tried to build it on MacOS, but with Homebrew installed it's probably doable.

yeah, make sure to set the environment variable for the crossover CP437 compatability, or you will be sad! All the details are in Brutman's manual. Once you do that, everything works great.

ATARI 800XL yooooo SO COOOL!!!!! <3

I love the aesthetic of the original 800 myself, the XL was just great an all, but the 800 was this massive heavy thing which had a really nice keyboard and those big rom carts (x2), so from a design perspective, 800 wins all day.

What still amazes me is that the 800 and 400 were released in 1979. Some of the stuff they did was way ahead of the computers that were released for many years. Consider the C64, ZX Spectrum, etc etc. Each of those platforms were good in their own way, but they didn't come out until 1982. The Atari had it going on well befoer then!

As a reader of Computer magazines and Electronic articles I tried typing stuff like 10 Print "Hi"
on all of the different home pc's in the stores.

It was years later I learned why when I pressed the Enter Key that nothing happened on the Atari 400 or 800 I typed it on.
I got the impression that those systems were Terminals.
Much later I learned the failure I saw was because the Cartridge slot was empty on the Atarie's I typed on.
Without a Basic cartridge inserted in the slot those computers couldn't do Basic

So I started out with a C=64.
In later years a fellow at work bought an Atari 800XL, I looked at his manual and learned it was a GREAT COMPUTER .

haha yes they are! I love me my bbs fun.

It's a great place, with lots of lovely people and I can talk to
everyone from my ancient hardware in a way that just works great. It
truly connects the new and the old in a way that nothing else seems to
do. What's not to love for an old luddite like me ? :)

I'm so not up with the modern lingo. I've read comments online before with 'based' and had no idea what they meant either. I guess 'rizz' is another one?

The 800XL came with five or so different keyboards. Most of them were definitely not as good as the 800's, but one of them - the ALPS one - is one of the best keyboards in the world (imo, of course) when nice and new. Also I'd argue the sleek 80s/futuristic design of the XL was cooler ;).

After reading BBS posts on subjects about IBM type Personal Computers on the Commodore 64 I used I began thinking of having a 486 PC built.
I had used the C=64 for nine years when a lady at church told me of a co-worrker of hers who built computers .
I called and learned the price was right from what I saw in Computer Shppers magazine pages, so I ordered it.

Of course I'm different from You and had the 486DX33 put in a Tower case.

My way of thinking is a Pizza Box rig is sorta like a Cat on the table, a Tower is like a Dog laying beside of me.
