If you want a turn based artillery game, Hedgewars is nice.

Another more serious artillery game is Scortched 3D.

For a turn based strategy game, pick Battle for Wesnoth. Great soundtrack BTW.

Doom and its ecosystem runs on Linux, so if you are into 1st person shooters, you can play Doom, Doom II, Heretic, Hexen and Strife and run them native, including its mods.

    hi!
Do you guys have any game reccomendations? (needs to run on linux)

    candycane

    hi!

If you aren't already aware, there are a few excellent options for gaming on Linux these days, with a lot of credit going towards Valve and the Steam Deck. Thousands and thousands of Windows games play perfectly on Linux today. Even brand new games can work great under Linux. I've recently purchased Battle Bit on Steam, which is a new Windows first person shooter, and it "just works" - great framerate, etc.

Steam itself will use Proton (Wine) for Linux compatibility with almost
the entire Steam library, basically right out of the box. Install Steam for Linux and start playing games you already own. You can look at the Proton Database for game compatibility under Proton/Steam: https://www.protondb.com

Check out Lutris, a Linux game launcher that supports games from almost any source (Steam, Origin, GOG, Humble, Epic, etc). You can also search the Lutris site's Database for games and compatiblity: https://lutris.net/games

Also take a look at the Heroic Launcher, which has excellent support for Epic and GOG games.

If you are into Final Fantasy XIV, there is a native Linux launcher for the game and it runs excellent under Linux.

If you have a Playstation 4 or 5, and want to experiement with Remote Play, look for Chiaki, an open source remote play app for Sony consoles (also available on mobile platforms, even Switch homebrew).

We are experiencing the best time ever (so far) for Linux gaming right now. Linux has surpassed Mac for the second most popular PC gaming OS (thank you Steam Deck). Its been a long wait, but we're here. Wine (and its varients, like Proton) have bridged the gap.

    Enjoy your linux gaming!

What kind of games do you like?

If you like 3D shooters, there's an open-source one that I found a while ago called Xonotic (available for Linux, Windows, and Mac). It's similar in style to Unreal Tournament, and there are active multiplayer games online. I think it's fun if you want to get into a game or two (not having to play too long).

The free trial they have lets you play most of the game with few restrictions. Basically you get cut off at the latest expansion, but it'll take you months and months of playing to even reach that really.

The linux launcher is is just called XIVLauncher. Its available as a flatpak too I believe:

As soon as I'm board with D4 I might have to come play that. What do
you need to do to get the client?

    DrClaw

The client is a free download right from the official site. Then you basically use a customer launcher to get it to connect to private servers. The two choices of customer launchers are Ashita and Windower, pros and cons to each. Getting the game to run under Linux/Wine is documented on WineDB and other places. Getting Ashita or Windower to work after that isnt terribly hard, especially if you have experience adding games to Lutris or Steam manually.

I'm happy to help out if/when the time comes, but that'd probably be a little easier over IRC or Discord or Revolt (trying this out instead of Dicord lately) or something.

The Pixel Remasters of FFI-VI are great. It "fixes" the original (which had enough "bugs"), and lets you play II, III and V outside of Japan. Check it out if you have the means.

Honestly, I don't super like turn rpgs besides the mario ones and
    undertale

it wasn't a big deal back in the day but even FF I is a bit of a grind. nothing is worse than Lufia though. i swear in some points it's like five steps in the overworld per 20-30 minute battle..

5 steps? What do the menus look like in Lufia?

I believe there is so many that one can be confused where to start.
I don't play on Linux but when I browse Steam and my library I see most of the games I really like to have Linux release as well these days.

Do you guys have any game reccomendations? (needs to run on linux)

I still play World of Warcraft on my linux desktop. It actually runs better then on windows because of the lower OS overhead.

You can still get games like "Baldurs Gate" for Linux from GOG. I think
they charge small fees like $4.99 though.

I picked up a copy for my Kubuntu Linux laptop...

What do you mean by "small fees"? Is it reoccuring?

These sort of old games are sold as one time payments.

It is not worth it for the game company to set a DRM infrastructure to bill you for such old games.

Nope, or at least it wasn't when I purchased the original Baldurs Gate
for Linux. It was a 1-time fee for $4.99 and well worth it, IMHO. :)
