Leo Brings Spring Galaxies (all night)
In mid-evening during late March, the naked eye stars of Leo, the Lion shine more than halfway up the eastern sky. When Leo begins to appear after dark, spring galaxy season has arrived. Positioned well away from the Milky Way, and free of its obscuring dust, the sky in and east of Leo is populated with galaxies. The Leo Triplet, made up of the spiral galaxies M65, M66, and NGC 3628, fits within the field of view of a backyard telescope at low magnification. It is located 2.5 degrees to the southeast of the star Chertan, the star that marks the lion's rear foot. For best results, view them after
the crescent moon has set in mid-evening.
