    * Para : ALL
    * Tema : {FreeDOS} ============================================================================ FreeDOS aims to be a complete, free, 100% MS-DOS compatible operating system.

FreeDOS 1.0 - updated Yes, the FreeDOS Project has reached the "1.0"
milestone. Download FreeDOS [2] - or buy it on CDROM. The official FreeDOS
1.0 CD ISOs have been updated. No changes to the content, but the ISOs are remastered with improved ISOLINUX boot settings, and should now boot on more BIOSes. If you had problems booting FreeDOS 1.0 on your PC, please try the updated boot CD. (Original release has been moved to a '3sep2006' directory.)

On to FreeDOS 2.0 .. or 1.1, or whatever label we eventually give it. I have been giving some thought lately to the next version of FreeDOS. I was, obviously, very thrilled when we finally released 1.0. But it's been a while, and we really should think about what comes next. For my thoughts on what I think needs to be there, visit my blog [3] - discussion should go to the freedos-user list [4] , please.

    What is FreeDOS

FreeDOS is a free DOS-compatible operating system for IBM-PC compatible systems. FreeDOS is made of up many different, separate programs that act as "packages" to the overall FreeDOS Project.

These days, there are three main uses of FreeDOS:

    * To run classic DOS games (like Doom, MAME, etc.)
    * To run business software that only supports DOS
    * To support an embedded DOS system, such as a computerized cash register or
    till

You can run FreeDOS on pretty much anything. While can run FreeDOS on a dedicated PC, now it's most often run inside a PC emulator. You can find PC emulators for all computer platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac.) If you are new to DOS, we recommend you use an emulator to install and boot FreeDOS. You can
even run FreeDOS using Java [5] in your web browser!

FreeDOS is open source software; you can view and edit our source code. Most FreeDOS programs are distributed under the GNU General Public License ("GNU GPL") which means they are not only open source software, but they are Free software. Because of this, FreeDOS would not exist were it not for all the people who contribute to it. Even if you didn't write code, you helped out the FreeDOS Project by submitting comments and bug reports.

We welcome new members to FreeDOS. You can help contribute to the FreeDOS Project by downloading our latest release and telling us what you think. We have a bug tracking system that helps you report problems and submit requests, and otherwise tell us how to improve FreeDOS. By participating in the development and debugging process, you help everyone.

    New DMA driver (updated) [6]
    2007-08-10 08:05 -
Update: - [ DOS ] UDMA now uses /S5 to /S1023 for 5-MB to 1-Gigabyte caches! All drivers again check for an 80386+ CPU. | Jack has announced a new DMA driver for DOS. He also released the sources and removed FreeDOS restrictions: XMGR, UDMA and UDVD are DOS drivers for an 80386+ system running MS-DOS V5.0+, EDR-DOS, and all similar DOS variants. XMGR is a DOS XMS memory manager. It
can support V3.70+ UMBPCI by Uwe Sieber and is able to load directly in UMBPCI upper-memory. XMGR also runs with MS-DOS V4.49/V4.95 EMM386 or other
equivalent "EMS managers". It is written to V3.0 XMS Specifications and can handle 4-GB of memory. UDMA is a disk caching driver with internal support for UltraDMA disks. It intercepts and caches all DOS Int 13h I-O requests for BIOS devices. UDMA does caching for the UDVD driver and also supports other "external driver" cache requests. It uses HMA "free space" and can be loaded
in only 1456 bytes of upper memory for up to a 250-Megabyte cache! UDMA sets its cache in XMS memory and caches from 5 to 750 Megabytes of data for diskettes, hard-disks and CD/DVD drives! UDVD is a driver for up to 3 IDE CD/DVD drives which may be UltraDMA or old "PIO mode" models. It accepts file-input requests by SHCDX33C and other CD "Redirectors", and it also
handles DOS "audio" functions. If "raw" CD/DVD input (audio, track-writers) is unneeded, UDVD caches data files by calling the UDMA driver, which greatly improves CD/DVD speed! "Free use" source files are offered with the XMGR, UDMA and UDVD binary files. See their README file for full details about these drivers. Available from http://johnson.tmfc.net/dos/drivers.html [7] and mirrored at http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/micro/pc-stuff/freedos/files/dos/udma/drivers/ [8] Read More " [9]

New dosfsck 2.11c with progress info [10]
    2007-08-09 14:38 -
Eric writes: "Hi all, please update your dosfsck to http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/by-others/ [11] dosdosfsck-2.11c.zip which now has progress in for for the -t option which can be enabled by the -v option. If you use -t without -v, is shows a hint "use -v". Background: The -t option of dosfsck takes ages, as it is a full surface scan. Even worse, the scan works by FIRST test- reading all files and directories (so you get different types of checks for file X, then same checks for the next file, etc) and THEN test-reading all unused clusters in linear order. So no nice "read large chunks in block mode" or anything - slow.
Dosfsck already had a bit of progress info during "checking files and directories" (printed a "." every N files). Together with the new progress
info (prints "N MB done" style text), even people who have the bad habit of using -t will no longer think that dosfsck got stuck. It only takes long with -t."

    Himemx/Jemm386 [13]
    2007-08-05 07:14 -
Jemm is an Expanded Memory Manager for DOS, based on the source of FreeDOS EMM386. Himemx is an extended version of FreeDOS Himem, which has several bugs fixed and there are also some optimizations implemented. Jemm has several advantages compared to FreeDOS and/or MS-DOS EMM386: * needs only 128 bytes (upper) DOS memory (Jemm386) * needs very little extended memory * is faster * works with MS-DOS, FreeDOS and DR-DOS * will use features implemented on later CPUs to further increase speed * unlike FreeDOS Emm386 Jemm has full VDS support * both Jemm386 and JemmEx can be loaded and unloaded from the command line * with its FASTBOOT option one can shorten the reboot time to just a few seconds * offers a 32-bit protected-mode API and allows to install plug-ins (JLMs [Jemm Loadable Module]). Current versions (released a few weeks ago, in July) are Jemm 5.64, and Himemx 3.31. You can get them from http://www.japheth.de/Jemm.html [14]

    FreeDOS fdapm update (2) [28]
    2007-07-18 07:27 -
Eric has updated FDAPM again, with new improvements. Eric writes: "yet another update for FDAPM and the IDLEDPMS screen saver that comes with it since
earlier this month: - idledpms now updates the timeout of an already loaded copy if you run it again, so you can always reconfigure at any time. the
binary is still only 1 kilobyte - fdapm vgaon, fdapm vgaoff, and idledpms now preserve the ega/vga sequencer clocking mode, fixing a stupid old bug where entering or leaving "screen off" energy save mode would mess up what you see
in graphics mode - vbe/pm is no longer trusted (use vbe/pm if available, but also do EGA/VGA after that.)" Find it at http://www.coli.uni-saarland.de/~eric/stuff/soft/ [29] fdapm-2007jul21.zip Read More " [30]

    Reading PDF under DOS [31]
    2007-07-09 09:59 -
Mateusz Viste has come up with a solution to a typical problem: how to
(easily) view PDF documents under FreeDOS. Mateusz writes: "I was searching
for a while a way to display PDF files under FreeDOS. I tried Acroread for
DOS, but it's not supporting newer PDF files. ... That's why I made DOSPDF. DOSPDF is just a batch file which calls GhostScript, PDFTOPS (from the Xpdf package) and LxPic to display PDF files in DOS. I made it because Acrobat Reader for DOS can't read the newer PDF format. IMPORTANT: DOSPDF MUST BE UNZIPPED IN THE C:\DOSPDF DIRECTORY. Otherwise it will not work (at least
until you modify the DOSPDF.BAT file). I hope DOSPDF will be useful to
    anyone!" http://mateusz.viste.free.fr/dos/dospdf.zip [32]
