(This is a repost. The first copy, on 18 Sep, was bounced by my uplink -
I posted it sixteen minutes after asking AreaFix for this echo, so at
that moment I was not yet an active link here and the message went to
badmail. My mistake, and my apologies if it arrives twice somewhere.)

A word of warning first: I do not speak Russian. I read this echo
through a machine translator, and I am writing in English because my
outgoing mail leaves here as CP437, which cannot carry Cyrillic at all
- a Russian text from me would arrive as a field of question marks.
Answer in Russian if that is easier for you; I will run it through the translator the same way I read the rest of the echo.

I am writing from Warsaw. I run the BBS "DEAD SOCKET" (2:484/101) and as
of this month I am the NC of net 2:484. My line is not an ordinary one:
a US Robotics Courier V.Everything 25 MHz with ID_SDL 4.03d firmware,
connected through a Cisco SPA122 VoIP gateway. There is no copper
anywhere in the path, and the modem still holds V.34 at 31200.

I am looking for Konstantin Norvatov's KN_SDL firmware - versions 0.F
and 0.F/BugFixed, files kn_f_20.zip and kn_f_25.zip. They lived at ftp://ftp.usr.spb.ru/courier/kn_sdl/0.F/

Already checked and empty: ftp.usr.spb.ru and usrmodem.ru are both gone
(the domain no longer resolves); the Internet Archive has only HTML
pages from them, no files. I did recover Vavaev's archive through the
Wayback Machine - AVC-56K is there (2.2, 2.3 beta, 2.4), but no KN_SDL.
Nothing on old-dos.ru either, nor in the "Polygon of Ghosts" threads.

If anyone still has these two files on an old disk or a CD, I would be
very grateful. I can accept a file attach at 2:484/101, or download from wherever you point me.

While I am at it, I am also missing these ID_SDL builds: 4.00
(idsdl400.zip / id25_400.zip), 3.04 (idsdl304.zip / id25_304.zip), 4.01c
for 25 MHz boards (id25c401.zip), and the documentation id401doc.zip / id402doc.zip.

Not empty-handed: I have put together an archive I will gladly share -
ID_SDL 4.01c/4.01d/4.02d/4.03c/4.03d for 20 and 25 MHz, 3.02, AVC-56K 2.2/2.3b/2.4, the official SDLs (US/Canada and international, including
7.6.7), V.92 images for the Courier 3453B and 3453C, documentation, and
the xmdflash flasher. I can send it as a file attach, or put up a mirror
on my own server if that is more useful to people.

Why I care: a line over VoIP behaves like a very bad analogue one -
jittery delay, clock drift, lost packets. Firmware that was tuned back
then for poor lines works noticeably better here than the factory
builds. By all accounts KN_SDL has "a colossal number of adjustments" -
exactly what a path like this needs. If anyone has experience tuning a
Courier for VoIP, I would be glad to hear that too.

It arrived safely and is in my collection now: SV20P.XMD and SV25P.XMD,
both 524416 bytes, with KN_SDL.DOC, all dated 5 June 1997. Not the 0.F
I was after, but it is the first real KN_SDL anyone has been able to

Something went wrong with that upload. The link answers 200 with
content-type application/zip, but the body is zero bytes. The file is
empty, and catbox itself is up. If you still have it, could you check
and put it up again?

That is very interesting to me. If you do not mind, I would like to
call it one evening - it would be a far better reference point than the transatlantic path I have been measuring.

I do not expect firmware to fix a missing common clock.

Reading KN_SDL.DOC, I find a direct path into the DSP:

ATGhhhh single-word DSP command
ATGhhhhhhhh two-word DSP command with a parameter, in hex
atg0012xxxx tone generator, xxxx = Hz*4
ATGXhhhh/ATGYhhhh DSP command 99, four nibbles from the parameter

and receive levels described as a linear value in internal DSP units,
7FFF corresponding to zero on S39. So, as I have too much free time, I
want to fiddle with it.

I am genuinely curious: did these historical modifications actually
touch the DSP firmware itself, or only the supervisor around it?
