• virtual box install on win7

From August Abolins@2:221/1.58 to All on Sun Dec 29 22:50:00 2024
Anyone here have experience in installing VirtualBox on a Win7
    machine?

I went through a successful Python pip install (for some
required dependencies), but a subsequent install of virtualbox
    itself fails.

Grabbed the latest VB offering at the Oracle site: version
    7.1.4 and 64bit.

My pc is 64bit, and 8GB ram.

Is there an installation log that documents the issues
encountered during install? ..there doesn't seem to be
    anything in program directory.

How about something like "C:\Users\tommi\.VirtualBox" ..

I dunno! There is no info on the Oracle site as to which
    version is for which OS.

I'll have to consider that one some time, I guess.

7.1.4 definitely wanted Python installed. :(

Is there an installation log that documents the issues..

How about something like "C:\Users\tommi\.VirtualBox" ..

Someone else in a blog/usergroup mentioned to try the %temp%/ Roaming/VirtualBox dir, but the log files there did not offer
    much.

From someone else's experience, 6.0.20 was considered to be the
last version to support win7, so I tried that. The install
    actually finished with that one!

But.. after that, the whole internet connection on the pc
stopped working; the win7 pc could talk to my local network/
router, but there was no connection to the internet beyond
that. I rebooted several times, tried to restart the network
manually several ways - but there was no difference.

That situation was dire. So.. I decided to do a system restore
back to before I started with the Python and VB installs.
That, worked.. and I got internet back.

After this experience, not going to play with VB for at least a
    few days.

I would really like the convenience of having a linux OS
operating simultanously on my win7 machine.

Did you need Virtualization enabled in BIOS? My BIOS supports virtualization, but it's reported as disabled.

The domain still remains unresponsive. Clearly a loser.

    Yeah..

Yeah what? Yeah that that the Oracle site does not have the
info.. or, that it does? Someone else suggested that the
manual has some version info in it. Fine. But that is not
obvious to look there when visiting the site!

I don't know about that. For me the "Check for Updates..." in file menu offered the update from 7.0.20 to 7.0.22. And now it says:

"You are already running the most recent version of VirtualBox."

    7.0.22 works here.

It is not the only application that installs fine to Win7, but doesn't run.. Bad installer. :)

Ah.. but that's AFTER the fact. After I installed it, it caused
network issues and killed the internet. So, exploring the
"file menu" for things was not a priority at that moment. ;)

After several attempts to get the internet going without
success, I uninstalled VB. But the internet was still broken,
so I ended up going back to a Restore point.

Gonna pass on VB, at least for a little while longer.

I have it enabled. I think you should do do that too.

I thought Wreck-it Ralph broke the Internet? :)

To be accurate, you didn't kill or break the Internet. You lost your connection to the Internet. Big difference.

Correct, I worded it wrong. I was frustrated about the sudden
lack of internet. To me, that meant that VB broke it.

I suppose how serious you take it, some people are way too technical, but hey, we're all different and take things differently. Glad you've got things situated regardless.
