• Feb 2025 - What are easily viable Point Software Options?

From k9zw@1:154/154 to All on Tue Feb 25 11:09:38 2025
Do we maintain a list of what Point software currently works?

Are there how-to guides we can coach someone as they work through?

    All best and 73

There is a list of FidoNet Software in the weekly FidoNews magazine,
published in the echo of the same name.

    I don't operate a point, but I know there is product-specific
documentation for all of the well-known packages.

Two that I know of offhand are WinPoint and OpenXP.

I have a full node number, but I use sempoint which is an old windows
3.1 program. I use that "msdos player" which wraps a 64bit shell around
it somehow and allows it to run on Windows 11.

Sure I don't use sempoint for anything but the reader part, but I like
being able to toss QWK or Bluewave packets into message areas on the local computer here for storage.

Appreciate that reminder, though we have to remember much of that list is historic and other than building a retro-setup, not current.

Ummm... not always and again much documentation and even YouTubes are woefully out of date.

When I set up my first personal mailer the documentation was arguably better, and that was in the 1980's.

Two that I know of offhand are WinPoint and OpenXP.

Wondering if some of the BBS packages also fuction well in a Point use case?

    Appreciate the reply!

    All best!

Thank you - I am thinking there is a space for a more contemporary solution. While I could follow what you've done, I am loath to guide a newbie through wrap-arounds and elmulations.

Perhaps we lack a KISS level option?

    All best,

Sure they do; at least Synchronet and Mystic would be fine. They could
just be set up with a point network address and get mail from whomever.
I know of several people doing that very thing.

Can you give me a pointer to that "msdos player" of which you speak? Or is it a part of Windows 11 that I don't know about?

    Best regards,
    Marc

Sure. The URL is quite long so I ran it through a URL shortner run by
sdf.org which is a safe one.

    https://tx0.org/4e/1

This has all the information you need about it. As I write this in Sempoint it's running from a double click on my windows 11 desktop. :)
