Ummmm, south of the Netherlands sits Belgium...i.e. southerners who RW>RW>> were successful in seceding from the north...or were they
successfully 'removed' from the north by the north. YMMV...

I'm certain you know the correct answer ...

I know that at one time (1200ad), the entire area was part of the the
    Holy
Roman Empire and Rome was the South then...by 1300ad the area was known
as Friesland. And by 1400 Friesland became Hainaut-Holland and a state called Brabant existed to the SE of the former Friesland and by 1500ad,
the area was known as Austria-Burgandy...

That's an impressive re-write of history. Of course ... the same stuff is written in Wikipedia which should never be considered an accurate source of information.

But that does not solve the issue ... did Belgium secede from the Netherlands or did the north remove it from the north?

Meanwhile, up around Mecklenburg (not yet
Germany), the Witt family became renowned for it's fishing expertise in
    the Baltic...

Those were the days. The Baltic is not a prime fishing ground (anymore).

    Mark,

    define: "belgian waffle"
The Belgian waffle is a North American type of waffle ...

As they use to say "I rest my case".

If you go to any eatery here and request a waffle for breakfast, you'll get an odd look.

It's like French fries which aren't French, Chinese food in the western world which definitely isn't Chinese in most cases, Canadian bacon which hasn't anything Canadian to it, etc, etc, ...

There is something that can be identified as a Belgian waffle.

However, it definitely is not a breakfast food. Apart from that, overhere
it is called a "Brussels waffle".

Is that anything like Brussel's Sprouts??? :)

there's no "'s" or "s" on brussel in the name of that veggie ;)

Ahhh, but there is a difference. In Canada and England, they call it
Back bacon and for a good reason. The cut is from the back of the pig and
is really seasoned and smoked ham. Bacon as we know it, as in pig's belly, is a different cut of the pig altogether.

    You mean it's not Canadians?
