From Carlos Navarro@2:341/234.5001 to Dmitry Protasoff on Sun Aug 23 15:07:13 2026
Great work, Dmitry! FidoMail is looking very good.

A replacement for the great (but unfinished and no longer maintained) HotdogEd app was neeeded.

I'll report any issues I find and make some suggestions.

To start with: in the nntp server settings I can select a default charset, but not in the ftn server settings (no dropdown).

It would also be nice to be able to set different charsets for each area.

    Thanks!

    Carlos

    Dmitry,

I added and rescanned an echo area. Then I deleted and disconnected it. Later I added and rescanned the same echo again, but all messages went to the Dupes folder.

Is there a way to avoid this? Would it be possible to reset the dupe database for an echo when it is removed?

Or maybe add an option to disable dupe detection? (Points may not need this, if their bossnode filters the dupes)

Also, is there a way to purge the Dupes folder?

    Carlos

Fixed! Now it has unified code for charset selection for both NNTP and FTN.

    Done!

Apple rejected my application and asked me for the following information:

    ---

    1. A screen recording captured on a physical device, running the latest operating system, demonstrating the app's functionality. The recording must begin with launching the app and show the typical user flow through its core features. If the app has any of the following, include them in the recording:

    - Account registration, login, and account deletion flows
    - Accessing paid content or features within the app, including any purchase or subscription flows
    - User-generated content, including content reporting and blocking mechanisms
    - Any prompts requesting access to sensitive data or device capabilities (for example, location, contacts, camera, or App Tracking Transparency)

    2. A list of the device models and operating systems the app was tested on before submitting for review
    3. A description of the app's functions and target audience, including the problem it solves and the value it provides
    4. Instructions for setting up and accessing the app's main features, including any required login credentials or sample files
    5. A list of the external services, tools, or platforms the app uses to deliver its core functionality (for example, data providers, authentication services, payment processors, or AI services)
    6. Describe any regional differences in the app's features or content, or confirm that the app functions consistently across all regions
    7. If the app operates in a highly regulated industry or includes protected third-party material, provide any relevant documentation or credentials to demonstrate you are authorized to provide these services or protected material

    Works fine for NNTP.

Seems to mostly work for FTN, but...

I'm having issues with one area on my node, the first one I tested FidoMail with (tag: 234.TEST). It has 106 messages. I've added, rescanned, disconnected and deleted it several times but when I rescan I always receive 4 messages and the other 102 go to Dupes (even after purging it).

Another issue I'm having sometimes is: I rescan an area but then it says there is nothing to sync.
After that, I rescan again and then I receive all messages twice (one copy to the correct echo and the other to Dupes).

I don't love the idea of disabling dupe detection completely at the moment, but let's go back to it in 2 weeks: if you still need it

    Ok.

Curious, what is your dupe detection method based on? Msgid, headers, body, a combination of those...?

Yeah, you found the exact spot which was still carrying a lot of code from the initial prototype - where the dupe database was just flat message IDs table.

New version with completely redesigned dupe storage will be released later today.

Now that I think about this, depending on when you last sync'ed, it could happen that you still receive some msgs after unsubscribing+deleting and then the area would be re+created...?
