• FidoMail Mobile 0.1.11+92 - message counters, compact echo list

From Dmitry Protasoff@2:5001/100 to All on Thu Sep 24 17:10:57 2026
    Hello All!

What is new in FidoMail Mobile 0.1.11+92:

    Echo list and reader:

    - The group counters now read "unread/total" (12/501). Unsent
messages get their own mark, an up arrow with the number, in a
different colour, so they no longer run together with the other
numbers. Settings -> Look -> "Count read messages" switches the
    counters to "read/total".
    - Settings -> Look -> "Compact group list": one line per echo, just
the name and the counters, so more echoes fit on the screen.
    - A message counter in the reader: how many messages of the echo are
read and how many remain. Settings -> Reading -> "Message counter"
puts it at the bottom of the reader, under the group name, or turns
it off. On a desktop it is also shown in the status bar.
    - When you open an echo, the list is scrolled so that the newer
messages are visible: the current message goes to the top of the
list under an ascending sort, and to the bottom under a descending
one. Before, with an ascending sort, the new mail stayed below the
    bottom of the screen.

    Replies and forwards:

    - The Settings -> Quoting setting for "Re:" in reply subjects has a
fourth choice that removes Re: altogether: a reply to
"Re: Re^2: Hello" gets the subject "Hello".
    - A forwarded message no longer shows its Origin line twice.

    Subscriptions:

    - If there is no area list from the uplink yet, the "Subscriptions"
screen shows your own echoes, so you can unsubscribe or add an echo
by name without waiting for the list to arrive.
    - GEcho is recognised as an AreaFix robot. It has no usable rescan
command, and the program now says so instead of sending one that
    does nothing.

    Can't reproduce this bug :(
What is your iOS version? Is the "Animate swipe-to-delete" setting off or on? Are you moving finger quickly or slowly?
Is the whole body one text field? May be free-edit mode was activated.

    See you,

    What is your iOS version?

    26.6.2

Is the "Animate swipe-to-delete" setting off or on?

It is "on". Has been from the beginning.

Are you moving finger quickly or slowly? Is the whole body one
text field? May be free-edit mode was activated.

I swipe like I always did. Tried faster or slower. Makes no difference.

I see quoted text in a different colour, so I guess there are different text fields.

What is free edit mode? How do I deactivate it if is was accidentally activated?

Note this happened when updating from 1.9 to 1.10. 1.11 is not available from Apple yet. Should I try that first when it becomes available?

    Cheers, Michiel

There is an icon to the right of the Reply string, to the left of "Save draft", when you are in Reply mode (you can tap on any icon and wait a bit to get a help string showing what it does).

It could be "Edit as plain text" and "Edit as parts".

No, this code is very old. Didn't touch it recently.

Aha. Yes that's it! Apparently I accidentally activated it. Maybe automatically deactivate it when leaving the app?

Anyway, now that I know about it, I may find a use for it. 😜

    Sorry for reporting a non-bug.

Well, current behaviour is a compromise between users' demands for how this should be implemented and "leaving the app" is not quite a thing in Android/iOS, where app is actually always running (even when not running at all).

If you don't mind, I'll leave it as is for now and wait for more feedback, maybe some new users will also be unhappy and will come with other ideas, so I could reimplement with once and for all.

    MvdV> Sorry for reporting a non-bug.

I still don't have documentation, so it's actually my fault. But I don't have time to write it and don't want to generate AI-slop, so I hope to have a feature freeze for a couple of weeks and at some point will actually do that!

Indeed. Let's stay away from halucinating AI. ;-)

so I hope to have a feature freeze for a couple of weeks and at some
    point will actually do that!

So here is just one for the road: ;-)

While the implemented methods of sending areamanager requests to the boss node are very usefull, they are not complete. It is unreasonable to expect that they are. And it certainly can not cope for future schanges in all tossers. To make use of the more advanced features of my boss node's Fmail I need to compose the netmail message for the area manager myself. Like I have been doing for decades... ;-) But then the signature gets in the way. Fmail interprets the "Cheers Michiel" as a request for area "Cheers". Can you make an option to not add the signature?

    Cheers, Michiel

Sure! I've placed it near UTF-8 checkbox, will be available in next release

    Great!

BTW, the greeting may also be left out, but that's not essential as I can delete that myself.

    Keep up the good work!
