If you sort by date or arrival in ascending order, when you enter an area the last viewed message is shown at the bottom, and newer messages remain hidden until you scroll down.

I'd prefer the highlighted message to be positioned as high as possible - at the top if there are enough newer messages to fill the screen (or at least near the middle).

That is how HotdogEd behaves. FidoMail also works similarly when descending order is enabled - lastread at the bottom, or as below as possible.
