Greetings!

I'm looking for suggestions for an offline mail reader, mostly for the editing capabilities... something with fairly straight-forward methods of quoting messages to which you reply. I do most of my BBSing on an 80286 running DOS 5, but I also sometimes use a Windows 10 box... possibly macOS but mainly the DOS 5 and Windows 10 OSes. It's been so long since I've used one, I don't remember what I used to run and unaware if anything new has come out.

I use MultiMail when I need an offline reader. It supports BW and QWK.

Build your own from source or there are DOS, Win, Mac and OS/2 builds for download at..

Thanks, Daniel! I was looking at MultiMail earlier. It sounds like BlueWave was around during the BBS golden era, so that might run well on this little Tandy 1000 TL/2.

No, I have not! At the risk of sounding ignorant, is that just a message base for, well, finding files like that? (grins)

Maybe FILEFIND was established before you left the scene, but it is an echo that some sysops have agreed to monitor in an automated way and respond to file lookup requests.

The system works by looking for the requested info, usually a partial string of whatever you are looking for in the Subject line, and making the message address to ALLFIX.

Look at some previous posts in the echo. You should get the idea.

And.. while I'm at it, I just wanted to say that OpenXP that I
mentioned earlier, is a project that is still currently
supported:

It's quite a cool experience using it as a point user. You can
retain specific messages, purge everything else after a set age
or qty per echo. The S)earch capability in the system for
messages is awesome.

What does "complete" mean? It turns out that your preference
for Renegade as a point system is omitting the msgid and
replyid that echomail grew to embrace.

Anyway.. OpenXP is designed to work as a point and should
support those minimum expectations.

Yes.. online BBS editors can take some getting used to.

But.. you can establish a point account with a bbs, the OpenXP
might be just what you are looking for. Take a look at some of
the screenshots at openxp.kolico.ca. Note: the font and
console window can be adjusted with your local Windows system.

I used BlueWave and Qedit for years, and loved the interface, being able
to collect taglines, and the programmability of Qedit.

I use MultiMail now, it feels a lot like BlueWave. I was using DOSBOX,
Telix and Bluewave to emulate an old DOS BBS environment, but ran into a
link for TSE, a 32-bit editor that's an evolution from Qedit.

I can edit, quote, reformat, justify paragraphs, import template text
like a signature, and look back through previous messages. I find I
only log in once a week or so to read messages locally, mostly to make
sure I see the same experience users see.

Noted. A Windows OS seems like a non-vintage approach, but if
you look at the screenshots, OpenXP is operates as a console
(text) program.

Are you restricting your vintage experience with a CRT display?
:D ..cuz, an LCD screen would be non-vintage. ;)

I do use Syncterm on modern machines, but I usually do my daily BBSing on the Tandy ;)
