Yeah, their current plans cut you off once you've reach your quota. Every now & then they bring back their unlimited data option which reduces speed to 512Kbps once you hit your quota, but none of their current plans have that feature.

I got a text from Lucky a couple of days ago offering me a deal
through Bell mobility.
(For any who don't know, Lucky is the pre-paid branch of Bell Mobility)

If I use my own phone, I can get 100 gig of data and unlimited phone
and texting Canada wide with 5G service for $35 a month..

Sounds amazing but, as we've discussed before, you can't rely on
the Bell price staying there forever and I don't really need more
of anything than I already have through Lucky..

But you're right.. I just checked and no good options are
available to those of us already using Lucky..

It's in the small print. Bell's 35$/mo offer is only for a few months, and then the prie rises on your account.

Lucky's prices stay the same. I still have a $15/mo plan with Lucky. Originally, it was unlimited talk and about 250MB data. But then they introduced a "switch" to 100% talk + USA calling, or 100% data with 500MB. I had the former for a little while. But since the plan was for a number I never planned to use for talk (I just wanted to "save" the original landline number), I switched to 100% data. And now, it's even a bit more at @250MB+ for auto-topup.

But you're right.. I just checked and no good options are
available to those of us already using Lucky..

It's a non-sensical marketing strategy. I currently have the $29/mo plan with a basic 25GB. With the bonuses, I get 26.5GB. But if I move to the $30/mo plan, the data is one 1GB!

Public Mobile pulls the same stunts, all promotions are for new customers only. If they come out with a killer deal, like they did recently, existing customers have to port their number out elsewhere and then sign back up as a new customer.

I just jumped through this flaming hoop to go from $35 for 70GB to $25 for 80GB. I don't really need that much data, I typically only use around 10GB per month as I have wifi at both home & work. It's nice to have for when I do need it (trips up north, camping, kayaking, etc).

But the $10 per month savings is what's really appreciated, which made the whole exercise worth it.

I saw something from Bell about throttling speeds and they still mention
it on most of their plans. It used to be down to 512kbps but it looks like recently they have dropped that to 256kbps..

The wording wasn't crystal clear though so it may not go for all plans,
and possibly only for plans with at least 100 GB per month included.

I just signed up with Oomba. I wanted a local number for a backup, as my Bell cell service where I live is terrible. The service is also good enough for Fax, which I sometimes use for meds/legal. It seems to be a good service for 17.00/month Canadian.

I've changed my plan with them 3 times over the past 7 or 8 years,
always getting more for less money. But it's been a while since they
offered anything new to existing customers, other than to switch over
to a different company they own or support.

You must have hit that one just right. Actually, I think I remember
when you got that plan. I think it was supposed to be only for new
customers but you somehow snuck through and got it.

I currently have unlimited everything in Canada plus, with bonuses,
16 GB of fast data for $35, and it's good enough for my needs.

Their methods are not totally idiotic. They offer new people super
deals to sign them up. But then, once you're a reliable customer,
they want to talk you into switching over to a more conventional
service through Bell Mobility or other.

Lucky was supposed to be a service for people just starting out
or with bad credit since it was a little limited compared to main-
stream suppliers and pre-paid so they knew they were going to get
paid.. But it's worked well enough for me that I've never seriously
looked at anything else..

As we mentioned, we get unlimited slower data once we use up the
data allotment and they support incoming texting world wide, rather
than just within Canada, so it had benefits that the 'better', more
expensive plans, didn't offer back then. It used to be slower (3G)
but they upgraded it to 4G at no extra cost and I couldn't get 5G
service out here even if I had it, which the Bell plan offers.
