Taiwanese EVA Air is the first Asian airline to equip aircraft with a "sharkskin" to reduce air resistance and therefore fuel consumption. The company is following the example of Lufthansa Cargo, SWISS and Austrian Airlines.

EVA Air is applying the so-called AeroSHARK foil to nine Boeing 777Fs. The structure of the foil is reminiscent of shark skin, hence the name. The foil reduces air resistance, which means that one percent less fuel is required per flight.

According to EVA Air, the "sharkskin" saves more than 2,500 tons of fuel per year and 7,800 tons less CO2 is released into the air.

AeroSHARK was developed by Lufthansa Technik and BASF. Lufthansa Cargo was the first user, followed by SWISS and Austrian Airlines.
