I believe that if we want to simplify only after the function is correct, we won't be using Scheme.
I think it's correctness > coherence, unity, simplicity, sanity, or any other optimization.
Everything in the book is either really profound, or very funny, and that's just the way the book is written.
I suppose that the primary distinction in the book is between the "what for" and the "not quite what for."
