I remember George Hatchew when I was living in Flint. I was a Blue Wave beta tester for quite some time.

George passed away and he was the only one doing Blue Wave. The other programmer having "sold out" to George so he could go to work for EDS in Flint.

EDS had a policy of effectively taking any outside work you do and "owning" it.
I don't think it would ever hold up in court, but they could make it difficult for you.

My actual Blue Wave registration code was long lost to time. My beta tester code was always temporary and George would refresh it every so often.

It would have been nice if the source for Blue Wave had been made public before George passed, but, sadly, it was not meant to be. His stuff was probably sold off in the estate sale and the person who got the source didn't know what it was and deleted it.

It would have been nice if the source for Blue Wave had been made
public before

probably sold
off in the estate sale and the person who got the source didn't know

was and deleted it.

Some BBS software currently in development (like Talisman and I think
WWIV?) still support it on the BBS side, and at least Talisman is open
source. So is Magicka, and the source is still available.

MultiMail reader supports the format on the user side.

If someone wanted to, they could probably use sources like those and
reverse engineer a new Blue Wave reader. With MultiMail still supporting
the format , I am not sure how much demand there is unless the BlueWave
reader had some features that MM does not.

That's still pretty much par for the course for most
software companies in most places in the US. I believe
that California now has some protections in place, but
most have an IP ownership clause.

As I recall, the specs for Blue Wave were made public. So someone could start from scratch. But QWK basically is "the standard" even though Blue Wave was much better. So getting a QWK door for a BBS is easy.

And while MultiMail is really nice (I use it), it doesn't have all the features that Blue Wave had for QWK. Maybe when I get some time, I can add those features. That's going to be a long time, though.

Not that I know of. I was going to try it on your BBS but the SX door doens't load. I assume that's Y2K stuff.

I must sheepishly admit it is a combination of Y2K stuff and my own broken setup. The door not loading is my own fault, but even when it did load it didn't seem to work properly because of Y2K stuff. I kind of forgot about it and now it's 'there but not working at all'. :(

I wonder how hard it would be to patch Silver Xpress for Y2K compliance - I've never done a patch like that before. But so many other things have been successfully patched, it seems like it should be possible.

The only Hector that II am aware of is Hector Santos and he created Platinum Express for Winserver. He is a hard man to contact.

Today it loaded for me, but in ASCII only and without the message bases.
I'm keeping my eye on it... I don't know why. LOL
