For me, the Prime Minister of Canada's speech in Davos marks the moment when the alliance with the US was no longer a given. When we look back in the future to the moment when global relations turned around and it became clear to everyone, I think this speech will be the defining moment.
The middle powers taking a pragmatic approach, forming coalitions on a case-by-case basis, and negotiating with the big powers based on their shared strength. A negotiation between equals.
That's not how the big powers like it, but the big powers don't care about anything, and in such an environment, you have to work together with others to stand up to the bullies that the big powers simply are.
China, the US, and Russia simply say it. Rules don't apply to them. Rules are for weak parties. They are for parties that can't enforce anything.
They'll certainly notice that now when the middle powers simply stop playing along.
Canada leads the middle powers here. It's also the country, after Ukraine, that has suffered most from the actions of a major power.
The Canadian economy was 80% dependent on the US economy. That must be reduced to 20%, so the US never again has such a powerful blackmailing tool against Canada.
