I might be crazy, or not understanding something correctly, but I believe that my city has raised my property taxes (this year) by 50%!

I'm positively thinking that this is some kind of mistake. I don't get tax bills, because my mortgage lender pays my taxes for me through an escrow account. But they sent me a letter saying that my payment is set to increase by $100 per month and that equates to about a 50% increase.

I did a Google search and NY gov/lunatic Kathy Hochul said that "If Trump abolishes the Dept of Education then you can expect your property taxes to go up to cover the lost money."

So I'm left wondering "Why did they already go up 50% if the Dept of Ed. hasn't even been abolished yet?"

Has anyone else seen a ridiculous increase in property taxes this year? (And I mean like really, really ridiculous?)

Call the tax assessor they'll tell you right away.

In Florida, not all states are the same, they cap what they can raise your taxes. So, if there's an old lady living beside you and has owned her property for decades she may be only paying a few hundred dollars a year... whereas if you just bought your house you may be pay a few thousand a year... Of course this depends on the assessed value.

Closing the Department of Education will take some work... it was started Congress and will need Congress to assist him on that. He may have a work around... Wait and see.

He wants to keep the money, if he can, at the same levels. He just wants the States to manage the Educational system and not the Federal government. He'd also like to have the money attached to the child so that if your kids are in a failing school you can move them.

In Florida they have Charter Schools, Ephin Awesome, they are like Public Schools but they are managed by the community. They cost money to attend if your money was attached to the child your payment my drop from $500 a month to $100. Thus making it more affordable.

The only ones who hate this concept is the Teacher's Union.

Thanks for explaining that. So, I just searched about that and found that it is capped here at 2%. And that sounds reasonable, but I still have a mystery to solve with the bank wanting an extra $100 per month.

Apparently the city has decided to stop collecting tax payments 2x per year and will now be collecting it 1x instead. I get that, but I don't get why the bank needs an extra $100 from me per month to facilitate the change.

No. But here in Michigan we changed things some (30?) years ago that limit the percent increase in property taxes year over year. So taxes go up slowly and only jump when you buy a new home (which, of course, is a deterrent to getting a new home).

If NY can get rid of their socialist "leaders", it has a chance. At least you aren't as bad as California. I say that but I don't know how good the election fraud machine is in NY.

My wife tried to decode the information the bank gave us and said that the property tax only went up slightly but that this increase in our monthly payment has something to do with the city's decision to take payments once a year instead of twice a year like they have in the past.

That probably depends on where you live. Seems like here they can be
adjusted every year but there is only a "serious re-evaluation" every so
many years. Sort of like how the electric company estimates your usage for
a couple of months between the meter readings, at which point you get charged for additional usage during those two months if the estimates were wrong.

Interesting. Ours are collected once/year. The monthly payment can also
go up in order to keep the minimum amount in your escrow account. Your mortgage company estimates what the insurance and property tax payments
will be each year and sets your payments accordingly. If the payments turn
out to be higher than estimated, you may see your monthly payment go up for
the next year in order to bring the balance in your escrow back up.

Mine went up this year because the escrow estimate last year was too low
and the escrow balance got too low after the insurance and taxes were paid.

Here in Michigan, the "cheap" tax bill is the winter one and summer is the "big" one. So if your city is pulling it out once per year, your escrow company needs more money from you now because your summer bill will probably be summer+winter and they need the money in the escrow to cover it.

My mortgage is paid off, so no escrow for me. But if my city told us that they were going to do only 1 tax bill per year, then I'd be socking away extra money now to cover the bill when it comes due.

We'll see how the election goes though. Canada uses a parliamentary system... Some times governments don't get a majority and have to work as/in a coalition government... Factions working together... I know this sounds cool but...

Quebec, the French speaking province has a federal political party that wants to separate from the country. This party will work with the Liberal party to end Canada as a country or it may get voted in as the official opposition party. I have no clue as to why this party is allowed at the federal level.


The only thing that can save Canada, right now, is that the Conservative party wins a majority and it's allowed to unwind Trudeau's mess. Political cycle is short and we won't have long to wait to see a result.

This could be true... US ballots are complected, you vote everything in... Even the dog catcher... My Citrus County Ballots are usually 14, or so, inches long packed with all kinds of things on it.

Alberta wanted to go with machine counting and the ballot only had 2 choices on it... Just 2... not 15... Just 2. With all the bad press about machine counting they chose to start it when it would have more choices on the ballots.

Trudeau also started to have expats voting as well... Prior to that you couldn't vote if you weren't living in the country. Starting all this mail in ballot BS.

Moreover, there are a lot of people still buying into the Government BS. I went to see my family in Ontario in January and I hear some people were getting their COVID vaccine for variant 35... or whatever.

My family is all conservative and won't be voting Liberal but I do think we've gone past the point of no return in Canada. There are too many Liberal retards in Quebec and Ontario that might seal the countries fate.

I recall about 10 years ago, we had an item on the ballot that got resoundingly voted down. Then the Elitists in Congress just passed a bill that made it happen anyway.

There's always a tipping point. If the number of people who benefit from the corruption exceed the number of people getting screwed, the corruption will continue.

The funny thing is that the Elitists keep thinking that other people are like chess pieces: placed on a board and do nothing. Reality hits them in about 10 years as the people getting screwed leave.

It's hard to have corruption when all your productive people have left the system.
