  • Why Are We Here? What's up with IPv6?

    Hey, just curious - why the focus on IPv6? FidoNet works over modems and IP anyway, so what's the point of differentiating between IPv4 and IPv6? Do you think there's a realistic scenario where incoming connections might fail on IPv4 but still work on IPv6?

    Yes, there is such a scenario. The pool of IPv4 adresses has run out. Some providers use so called CGNAT for their customets. That means they no longer have a unique glabally routable IPv4 address. That makes unsollicited incoming connection IPv4 impossible. IPv6 solves that problem.
