Cats remind us that not everything in Nature has purpose.

It seems I don't get the joke. :-)

Does the author assume cats are purposeless?

Does the author assume cats are purposeless?

Possibly. My experience with them is that many pet cats have a tendency to
do a lot of things that either don't seem to have purpose, or that are done
    out of spite.

On the other hand, for a while I had a neighbor who had a cat that was a
very good mouser. He kept the small rodent population down. My opinion of
him is that he certainly had purpose. ;)

I'm in a semi-rural area. We have a rodent population and two
neighborhood cats who like hanging in our back yard. I'm OK with that.
    :)

Oh, yeah, I miss that cat. AFAIK, he is still living just somewhere else.

We had a neighborhood cat that belonged to one owner, but was an outdoor
cat. Another neighbor started feeding him, not knowing who he belonged
to, decided he liked the new house better, and moved in.

    Fickle, they are.

The old owner would walk by and see the cat, he'd respond with a feline
    "meh".

Funny as it may seem, humans have this idea that a cat can "belong" to someone. It's the most common misconception with outdoor cats. On the other hand, we had a cat who never even thought of walking outside the apartment door (100% confirmed indoor cat).

There are stories about dogs traveling thousands of miles to get back to a family that moved, and a cat that traveled the same distance to get back to the house the family moved from.

My sister moved into two houses and inherited a cat with each.

At least, there are Youtube channels like "cat-brain.exe" or "meow-funny" (I'm sure there'd be more of those in the recommendation panel). Now who's gonna say "cats don't make sense"? They're the funniest animals on the planet. :-)

They are pretty funny. Somewhere out there, there is a video of a mountain lion (large, wild cat) playing with someones outdoor swing.

There are also several with housecats reacting to printers, toasters, etc., that are also funny.

BTW, there's a YT channel of some rich dude who owns a mountain lion and a cheetah as house pets. And a few others who own bobcats. Looking at those beasts, they behave just like regular housecats, except a regular small cat is unlikely to bite your head off in case something goes wrong... :-/

This one was supposedly a wild cat that someone happened to pick up on a security or nature cam. We have actually had some reality TV shows about people who own wild cats. A lot of them really do act like housecats but,
as you point out, if something goes wrong the magnitude of what happens
    could be increased dramatically.

Well, yeah, it is difficult not to run into them. ;)

There's a guy on YouTube who lives in the woods and has a pit bull, a
raccoon, and a coyote that all co-exist on his land and in his house.

The alpha? A cat he's named "Murder Mittens". He chases them all around
    and terrorizes them.

    Maybe he got better food.

My Sister has a cat like that. Besides food, she got him a heated bed to sleep in on those cold, Winter nights. Oddly enough, despite the grand treatment, it won't go into the house or let her pet it.
